After spending weeks around Bangsar, I realised I’d been postponing the obvious—actually exploring Kuala Lumpur’s historic centre. So one afternoon, my husband and I headed toward the Merdeka area, where the city’s landmarks cluster around Merdeka Square, Central Market, and Masjid Jamek.

Merdeka Square itself was under renovation at the time, wrapped in scaffolding and fabric that made lingering difficult. But even when sightseeing stalls, there’s usually one thing I refuse to skip: dessert.

A Bakery Worth Detouring For
Just a short walk from Central Market, my husband suggested we check out a bakery he’d noticed during a previous weekend visit. KLCG Confectionery & Bakery, as it turns out, is known locally for drawing long queues on weekends.

We visited on a weekday afternoon, when the shop was calm enough to browse without pressure. The display cases alone made it clear why the bakery has built a reputation—neatly arranged cakes, tarts, and pastries that felt more patisserie than casual bakery.

What stood out immediately was something unexpected for Kuala Lumpur: mochi strawberry cake.
Mochi Meets Fraisier
The cake, labelled Mochi Fraisier, combines soft sponge, strawberries, cream, and a layer of mochi. Fraisier is a classic French strawberry cake, but the addition of mochi gives it a distinctly East Asian twist—chewier, softer, and more texturally playful.

It’s not the kind of dessert you expect to encounter casually in the city centre, which is exactly why it caught my attention. Even without tasting it that day, the combination alone explained its popularity among local dessert lovers.
What We Actually Took Home
Faced with too many options and limited appetite, we skipped the cakes and tarts and opted for pastries better suited for takeaway: a strawberry cream croissant and a bagel for the following morning.

The croissant, a seasonal item, travelled surprisingly well. After a few hours of walking around the city and refrigeration at home, it still tasted fresh the next day—always a good sign for cream-filled pastries in a warm climate.

The bagel was solid, though the cream cheese didn’t stand out as much. If I were to return, I’d focus on the baked goods themselves rather than the spreads.

A Calm Stop in a Busy Area
KLCG Confectionery & Bakery sits in a part of Kuala Lumpur that many visitors pass through quickly, ticking off landmarks before moving on. But it works best as a pause rather than a destination—a place to step out of the heat, slow down, and recalibrate.

If you’re exploring Central Market or the Merdeka area and find yourself craving something sweet, this is the kind of bakery that makes a small detour feel worthwhile. And if you do manage to try the mochi strawberry cake, you’ll likely understand why it keeps people lining up on weekends.
