The Distinction: Resident, Not a Tourist
Most travel blogs focus on the peak of the experience—the first bite of a famous dish, the view from a five-star hotel, the filtered highlights of a weekend getaway. Notes from Elsewhere is the opposite. It is a personal writing and lifestyle archive documenting everyday life across cities I have lived in, rather than merely visited.
I am not a traveler; I am a resident. I believe that a place only truly reveals itself when the novelty wears off, when the local language begins to sound like home, and when you start navigating the grocery aisles without a map.
What You’ll Find Here
This site is a collection of records written from the places I have momentarily called home. It focuses on the long-term living experience, providing a raw and honest look at:
- Daily Life in “Destinations”: What it’s really like to wake up in a city that others save for years to visit.
- The Practical Reality: Hard data on the cost of living, the housing market, and finding the right neighborhood for a long-term stay.
- The Local Lens: Hotels, restaurants, and hidden cafés experienced through the eyes of a resident, where quality is measured by consistency, not just a first impression.
- Quiet Observations: The stories that emerge only after staying long enough for the initial excitement to fade and for reality to settle in.
The Chapters of “Elsewhere”
Depending on the chapter of my life, “elsewhere” has meant different things.
Chapter 1: Gothenburg, Sweden (The Student Life) I spent years navigating the cold but beautiful reality of Sweden as an international Master’s student. While Sweden is often touted as one of the “happiest countries” in the world, I experienced the friction behind that facade. I’ve survived a brutal housing scam and experienced the small miracle of securing a room against 140-to-1 odds. This archive documents the resilience required to build a life in Scandinavia.
Chapter 2: Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (The Expat Transition) Today, I am carving out a new path in Kuala Lumpur. I moved here not for a holiday, but to build a home following my husband’s career transition. From the humidity of the tropical afternoons to the complexities of settling into an expat sanctuary like Mont Kiara, I explore neighborhood after neighborhood. I face the everyday challenges of an expat—from the “hygiene shock” of local heritage eateries to the sophisticated order of modern malls.
Why I Write
With over 10 years of professional experience in PR and marketing, I’ve spent my career crafting messages for others. Notes from Elsewhere is where I curate my own truth.
The purpose of this site is not to recommend perfection, but to record reality—honestly, quietly, and over time. It is a space for the stories that surface only when you stay long enough for a place to truly settle in your heart.
I don’t offer “Top 10” lists for tourists. I offer a map for those who want to understand the soul of a city.
